ARRIVING TO MAINLAND PORTUGAL BY PLANE

ALLOWED (Essential and non-essential travel) to:

Countries of the European Union, Schengen Associated countries(Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland)Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, China, South Korea, United States of America, Jordan, New Zealand, Qatar, Republic of Moldova, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Kingdomand special admnistrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.

Every passenger must submit:

  • RT-PCR Test (or similar NAAT test) - 72h before boarding, or
    Rapid Antigen Test(TRAg) - 48h before boarding, or
    EU Digital COVID Certificate (from 1 July) – Note for a EU Digital COVID Certificate based on vaccination: the vaccination scheme must have been completed at least 14 days before the date of travel;
    Children under 12 do not need to present test;
    All passengers must complete the Passenger Locator Card before departure to Portugal or on board.

Only Rapid Antigen Tests (TRAg) that are on the list agreed by the European Union Health Committee are allowed, according to the standardized dataset (identification, test information and date).

Travel, by any reason, to Portugal by travelers with a COVID EU Digital Certificate is allowed.

Foreign citizens who board without the aforementioned tests must be refused entry into national territory.


For travelers from India, Nepal and South Africa (either by plane, land or maritime transportation), only “essential travels” are allowed (i.e.,professional reasons, for studying, family reunion, health reasons or humanitarian reasons).

Beyond complying with the above requirements, travelers from India, Nepal and South Africa must also comply with a compulsory prophylactic isolation period of 14 days, at home or in a place indicated by the health authorities, after entering mainland Portugal. These travelers must register with SEF - Foreigners and Borders Service before entering the country at https://travel.sef.pt The prophylactic isolation does not apply to passengers travelling on essential trips whose period of stay in national territory, attested by a return ticket, does not exceed 48 hours.

If, as a foreign citizen, you are travelling to Portugal also as a resident, be prepared to show evidence of your residence status, such as your residence card or certificate, to your airline and to the immigration officer on arrival. The presentation of the EU COVID Digital Certificate of vaccination or recovery, exempts the fulfillment of quarantine or isolation for travel reasons. Minors who travel with one or both of the holders of parental responsibilities, or with another companion responsible for them, are exempt from carrying out a quarantine when the companion(s) hold a valid vaccination or recovery certificate upon entry in national territory.

Travelling to Portugal in transit only: Be aware that foreign citizens without legal residence in Portugal who make a stopover at a national airport must wait for the connection flight in a proper place inside the airport.
